Thanksgiving has always been a time for family. If, as in the case of those living in The Community, the family may be scattered around the country, the members of the community come together in one big family meal. This year's dinner had all the trimmings: turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberry salad, pecan and pumpkins pie. You could tell the food was good by the sounds of "yum" and "I must have that recipe" heard throughout the hall. It was a good time to greet new residents and those who just recently returned for their winter stay. Happily, there was more than enough to go around and many of the senior residents could take "doggy bags" which would provide several future meals. Throughout the event we expressed thanks for life itself, health, and friends and neighbors who are "family". Isn't it sad, though, that to some Thanksgiving has lost its original purpose and really has become "Black Friday Eve." Needless to say, none of the seniors in this community will be standing in line at Best Buy at midnight. They'll be tucked snug in their beds. Turkey has something in it that puts you to sleep early.
