FROM THE ROAD: LET IT SNOW?

The headline in a Lake Tahoe area newspaper was "Tahoe hopes for a whiter winter season." This caught the attention of someone who moved to the desert from Missouri to get away from snow. The article went on to say that snowfall last year was below the average of 430 inches. 430 INCHES OF SNOW! but forecasters say it many be up to 500 INCHES this year. Of course I have also come to realize that the livelihoods of many in this area of the Sierra Nevada depends on snow and skiing. I first discovered this when in the Hard Rock Cafe in South Lake Tahoe and faced with "Let It Snow" in large letters on the wall. One is also reminded daily about what is to come in just a few months by the tall poles along the roads to indicate to snow plows just where the road is. The newspaper article also quotes the editor of The Old Farmer's Almanac as saying: "Sweaters and snow shovels should be unpacked early and kept close by throughout the season." For someone who has picked the desert over snow I can only hope "early" doesn't mean the first of October.
