CHRISTMAS MEMORIES: THE REAL ST. NICK

There are many tales told about the origin of St. Nicholas. But I didn’t get the “true” story until a visit to Myra, Turkey. That was the home of the Greek Bishop of Myra who was later known as Saint Nicholas (also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker). He was known for giving gifts secretly to those in need who lived around him. Nicholas was known for such practices as putting coins in shoes left out and dropping presents down chimneys. From such actions he became the model for Santa Claus, aka St. Nicholas. He is said to have been buried in a church in Myra and his life remembered in a bronze statue outside the church.
