My uncle, Ross Cody, was one of those brave souls who took part in D Day 70 years ago. A member of the 101st Airborne Division he flew into France behind German lines in a glider filled with explosives. The unit's purpose was to make lots of noise blowing up things to draw the Germans away from Normandy where the invasion was happening. He later went on to fight across Europe including in the Battle of the Bulge. For his service he was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Combat Infantry Badge and a Silver Star. I didn't know about this until about five years ago when he finally received his medals. He didn't talk much about his WWII service. Thanks Uncle Ross and happy Veteran's Day.
