BUSY DAY IN YUMA TOWN

As fall temperatures and winter visitors arrive there are more and more activities in Yuma. For instance it was up before dawn today to see several dozen hot air balloons take off during the 22nd Annual Colorado River Crossing Balloon Festival. The weather was great; not too cold with a gentle breeze. Great for ballooning. It was also great for the First Annual Date Festival held on Historic Main Street. Growing and processing Medjool dates is big business in Yuma which is the center of the largest date producing region in the country. That event included a tour of the Date Pac plant which packages the fruit for the entire area. In between these two popular events came an unpublicized one: half price day at the Salvation Army Thrift Store. Even non thrift shoppers were aware something big was happening by the long line in front of the store early this morning. It was somewhat reminiscent of the long lines waiting for iPhones at Best Buy but was comprised of a different clientele who were waiting for used clothing, TV sets, appliances and household items. When the doors opened what happened could only be described as a "feeding frenzy". Topping off the day in The Community was a Welcome Back party with burgers, beans, slaw and brownies. We even convinced a lady who lives in the community year-round to come out for the big event. She didn't come to a Welcome Back party last year because she didn't leave so didn't qualify for a "welcome back."
