STAR OF THE SHOW

The star of the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma Air Show this year, even though it didn't get off the ground, was the sleek F-35B jet aircraft which is cable of short take-offs and vertical landings. MCAS is the first base in the country to house the new jets. The first F-35 arrived last fall and additional ones are scheduled to be delivered each month. MCAS will eventually get five squadrons each with 16 aircraft, and one operational test and evaluation squadron of eight aircraft. The F-35B is slated to replace the Marine Corps' F/A-18 Hornet, AV-8B Harrier and EA-6B Prowler.  The plane is so advanced that one pilot said it "will almost fly itself."
