There are rumors and then there are rumors. The worst kind, of course, is one which can hurt somebody if not true. But you can also have fun with rumors. Several years ago Fry's, a large supermarket in the Yuma Foothills moved to a beautiful, large new store. Discussion in our senior community turned to speculation about what would happen to the old store. Some thought maybe Albertson's, another large chain now located a dozen miles away, would open a store there. In fact, one member of our community was convinced this was going to happen because he got the information from "the main butcher" at the other store. It never happened and probably won't because Fry's still owns the property and most likely will not want that competition. In good fun, however, it is easy to start rumors without having any basis in fact. Recently I noticed two large Safeway semis parked near the old store. There is not now a Safeway in Yuma. All I had to do was pass along the sighting of the two trucks and people will make inferences and pass it along. I really think the two truck drivers were having lunch at a nearby restaurant. But who knows? It'll be interesting to see what the story is after it has had time to go through several sources in our community. Rumors pass slow in the summer with the winter visitors gone. So it may be awhile before I can report back on how it went.
