CIRCUS MEMORIES

On the way home to the Foothills from Old Town Yuma recently I was thrilled to see the Barnum & Bailey Circus train stopped, stretching for what seemed like miles on the Southern Pacific side track. I was happy to see that the circus was still alive and it reminded me of a time many, many years ago when I worked for "The Biggest Show on Earth" for a day. As a child my grandfather took me on a train from our hometown of Wooster, Ohio, to Mansfield about 30 miles away to see Barnum & Bailey. We got there in time to see the big top going up and I got a special certificate as a "circus roustabout" for helping put up the tent. I don't remember what I actually did but I do remember that I considered myself a grownup that day. This was the fondest memory I have of my grandfather and bred in me a love for the circus. Wish I knew where "The Greatest Show On Earth" was headed. I might have followed to be a "roustabout" for a day.
