FROM THE ROAD: LIVING ICE

Mendenhall Glacier, near Juneau, Alaska is not the stationary ice field that it appears. The glacier, 12 miles long, has actually receded close to two miles since 1958 when Mendenhall Lake was formed. The glacier can be viewed from the Visitor Center manned by the U. S. Forest Service. Not only is there a good view of the ice field but also many exhibits explaining what glaciers, in particular Mendenhall, are all about. It was the first USFS visitor center in the country, built in 1962.
