Smokey the Bear from the U.S. Forest Service and Sparky, the firehouse dog, make a lot of appearances in Northern California such as this one at the Calpine Marketplace. They work hard at getting across to people the importance of fire safety. Currently there are over a half dozen wildfires burning in California. Hundreds of thousands of acres of forest have been lost with a cost of hundreds of million dollars to bring the fires under control. Wildfires are a concern of most people who live in this part of the country to the extent that, whenever they see a helicopter with a water bucket fly over, they check the current fire status in their area. It's been a bad year for fires and the danger is still not over and may not be over in the Sierras until the first snowfall.
