FROM THE ROAD: A LOOK AT TRUCKEE

Truckee, California, is a small but historic town at the foot of the Sierras. The city, known as a jumping of spot for immigrants who were crossing the Sierras to California, has managed to keep its small town look and feel which draws thousands of tourists each year. Many of those tourists spend time and money on Truckee's main street, Donner Trail Road. It is a well kept downtown with local, not chain, stores. The downtown area is site of many special activities such as the Arts and Crafts Show (pictured). A tour of the area shows how well its character has been maintained. There the Methodist Church, the Old Jail, what looks like an old gas station but is really a real estate office, a reminder in a store window about the importance of the railroad to Truckee, and a look at some of the goodies available to browsing tourists.
