FROM THE ROAD: SEEING THE SIGHTS ON A SEGWAY

The Segway is amazing and enjoyable. This personal transportation device is used in many big cities for taking tourists on an up-close look at city life. I first rode one on a historical tour of Yuma, AZ and was fascinated by how easy a Segway is to manipulate. The device is balanced with a gyro so direction and speed is controlled by the slight movement of your body. I jumped at the chance while on the road to take a Segway tour of downtown Reno, NV along with my wife and her grandson. We not only saw up-close the area of Reno, with the casinos, most people relate to when talking about "The Biggest Little City in the World". We got to travel also along the Truckee River which runs through the city and see how a river walk had been built along it to provide enjoyment and recreation for citizens. You come away with a different understanding of how a city has developed. A note about the photo under the familiar sign: there was a big car show there on this day and the street was closed to traffic. I mentioned how easy a Segway was to maneuver. One caveat when riding, however: don't let the big wheels on the device hit a solid surface like a wall. It can throw off the gyros as well as the rider.
