In the resort area around Truckee, CA, in the Sierras a fellow from the flat desert gets to admire bike riders who peddle up grades that my little four-cylinder car struggles with. An example is the photo above with a rider ascending the winding and hilly highway from Truckee up to Donner Summit which sits at about 7200 feet above sea level. In Truckee there are almost as many bikes on the road as autos. The city is aware of this and has marked bike lanes on most of its streets. For someone with a 16-speed bike, but only knows on to use two of them, the Sierra bikers are most amazing.
