One of the fun times we used to have as a family at Christmas when growing up was father’s photo night with the Christmas tree. We always had a huge, live tree each year which took up a large part of our small living room. After the presents had been opened, dad would sit me and my sister down in front of the tree to record the moment. He did this with a small Kodak Brownie camera without a flash. What he would do to brighten the photo was to make reflectors out of box lids wrapped in aluminum foil and regular light bulbs. I never really found out how my father got interested in photography but I’m glad he did because it got me interested in cameras. That interest has helped me develop a skill that has been a major part of my working career and now my retirement. I kept the Kodak Brownie for some time but because it was hard to get film for it and because of a need to downsize I let it go. I will never forget, however, photo night under the Christmas tree and I do have some of those photos to remind me.
