Putting their creative skills to work, twelve women met in the clubhouse at Tuscany Senior Center January 25 to make dresses for girls in Liberia. Most of the volunteers were Tuscany residents. Others were members of the Gila Mountain Methodist Church where project organizer Edna Bell is a member. A special worker was Winnie Dickson whose family had moved to Yuma from Liberia less than a month ago. Working in an assembly line format the women produced 30 colorful dresses. These will be given to Marcella Ruch, a Gila Mountain member, to distribute when she returns to Liberia to continue her medical missionary work.
The Tuscany Quilters group has sewn the little dresses for the past three years. Last year's dresses were delivered to Nicaragua by a Quilter's member.
Winnie brought her two youngest children, six-year-old Royal and four-year-old Abigail. I had the opportunity to show the children around Tuscany and we found many new things for them to experience. They learned how to play shuffleboard and horseshoes, got to take a look inside a large RV, and discovered cactus for the first time. It was a joy for me and a learning experience for them.
