THE GREAT MIGRATION

An amazing event in Africa each year is the migration of millions of wildebeest from Tanzania to Kenya in search of greener pastures.

I thought of this while driving from Las Vegas to Yuma along the Highway 95 corridor today. There was a constant flow of RVs pulling cars and fifth wheels pulled by huge diesel trucks heading north. These "beasts" were the mobile homes of winter visitors in their annual migration from Yuma's winter warmth back to their northern homes where the snow may be melting and temperatures rising above freezing. Like the wildebeest they are seeking greener summer pastures.

This migration, numbering some 80,000 winter visitors, is both a good thing and a bad thing for Yuma and its residents. It's a good thing because those who live in Yuma year round can actually walk up a grocery store aisle with a cart and not once have to say "excuse me." On the other side of the coin, however, the community itself suffers from the loss of revenue provided six months out of the year by the people from the north who are perceived as rich.

Watching the migration of the motorized "beasts" one gets a look at how some Americans choose to spend their money.
