FROM THE ROAD: THE LURE OF GOLD

The lure of gold was overwhelming when lodes were discovered in the Yukon in 1896. Just how overwhelming is shown in the National Park Service exhibit at Skagway where an exhibit visually shows the 2000 pounds of supplies (a year's supply) that prospectors were required to have before they could enter Canada and the gold fields. These supplies had to be carried on their backs through mountain passes providing access to the gold fields. It required many arduous, cold trips. The task was so daunting that some didn't make it to the Yukon until the gold had pretty well been panned out. The hardships of prospectors is well documented in the NPS museum at Skagway.
